So, he started frequenting them. For four years, he befriended regulars, bartenders and clients. He became one of them. Then a sort of photo metamorphosis happened through the life in the bars of St. Georg. Like a cockroach, his camera, started crawling on the floor recreating what it feels like after a night of solitary rounds. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBalloons, velvet cushions, faded wallpaper and champagne –decayed fragments of the old fancy times, all shot with flashlight, all in close-up. They could perfectly be the snaps of a drunkard. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd then, it’s people. Living characters. Life’s rebels. Moralists call them the prostitutes, pimps, underdogs and petty criminals of Hamburg’s streets of shame. But, in fact, what they are is common people living their lives the best they can. Just like everyone they want to hang out, have fun and some beer. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSomewhere between the bittersweet fatalism of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and the deadpan mien aesthetics of Aki Kaurismäki, Malmström recreates in colour a contemporary “Café Lehmitz”. Its ambience is imbued with visual stylization and a warm-hearted emotional immediacy towards its people who just want to be left in peace and “drink their bitter cup of broken dreams”, as the famous Finnish tango artist Olavi Virta sings. The viewers attend a performance that is reminiscent of the tradition of the Theatre of the Absurd, with the protagonist alone, naked, and handling a sex toy in every possible way. Although his irrational behaviour might at first glance appear like an act of celebration and relief at the end of a a grim era, through repetition it soon turns into an allegory of fear for an uncertain future - it seems like a performance for itself and the camera. The photographic frame is the prison of the performer who, unlike the photographer, cannot look beyond the dark cloth behind him.\u003cbr\u003eBoris Mikhailov(B. 1938 in Charow, Ukraine) is one of the most important chroniclers of the everyday life of a (post-) Soviet society. Mikhailov studied electrical engineering at Charkov University of Technology and initially worked as an engineer, before starting to take photographs as a self-taught artist in the late 1960s. The early series of the 1960s and 70s often show personal pictures of friends, acquaintances or partners of the artist. The world in his pictures is always unadorned and rough - everyday scenes, poverty, sexuality, despair, resignation, decay of a forgetting Eastern Europe. Mikhailov is always dedicated to the outcasts of society. Nowadays the fifth month of the year is referred to in Czech as “květen”. “Máj” is an older word that has a romantic quality and is closely associated with a famous poem of the same name by Karel Hynek Mácha written in 1836. In 1996 the British supermarket chain Tesco purchased the store, renaming it “My” in 2009. If this name is interpreted as an English word, then it refers to an individual. It is surely no coincidence that this English name sounds much the same as the old Czech one. If pronounced, however, according to Czech phonetics, which no one ever does, it sounds quite different. Then it means “we” and refers to a collective. Since 2017 Tesco has been selling off some of its stores in the Czech Republic because of financial losses.
