“In Autumn 1998 I was playing drums with Cat Power. The regular drummer couldn't make it for a tour of Europe, so after one rehearsal with Chan and Mark—guitarist and childhood friend of Chan’s—we set off from London. We were touring Moon Pix, her achingly beautiful record that had just been released.

There was never a set list, and we would play whatever songs Chan felt in the moment. The whole crew was Chan, Mark, me, and Dennis, the driver, in an old van with only a radio for entertainment. Chan would sing along to whatever was playing, most especially Cher’s ‘Believe’ every time it came on.

This picture was taken in the morning after a show in Zürich. We were staying at the house of the promoter. Chan is painting her toenails and we are getting ready to head out to the next date on the tour. The whole thing was magical.”
