This print is an outtake from Polar Night—a variation in angle, crop, and treatment of an image from the same scene. Mark Mahaney’s Polar Night traces a passage through a rapidly changing landscape in Utqiagvik, Alaska’s northernmost town.

The work explores prolonged darkness, capturing the strange beauty of a snowscape cast in a two-month shadow. In the absence of sunlight, artificial lights flare and unfamiliar forms emerge from the landscape, revealing moments that are at once soft and harsh. While the presence of climate change looms heavily over this Arctic environment, Polar Night ultimately unfolds as a visual poem about endurance, isolation, and survival.
