Taking in Sarah van Rij’s photographs is akin to watching a lunar eclipse: the chiaroscuro of her black-and-white images gradually gives way to red tones, at times calming and at times intense, throughout her color work.

Reflections, shadows, hidden faces, and fleeting silhouettes move through a series of scenes brought together in perfect harmony, with subtle hints of faded beauty. Each image captures the gentle essence of the atmosphere while confronting the palpable energy of a Seoul in constant motion, shaped by the movements and gestures of its pedestrians.

The photographer’s desire to record her impressions during a brief stay is evident. Whether rushing through the streets, stopping for a coffee, waiting for the subway, or looking through windows, she conveys the delicacy and poetry of everyday moments.

Born in the Netherlands in 1990, Sarah van Rij developed a passion for film as a child before purchasing her first camera at the age of 22. She refined her photographic practice while working as creative director for a lifestyle and fashion retailer in Amsterdam.

Alongside her personal projects, van Rij has developed commissioned work for a wide range of fashion and editorial clients. Her photographs have appeared in prestigious publications including Vogue Italia, M le magazine du Monde, and The New York Times.

Inspired by the House’s travel heritage, the Louis Vuitton Fashion Eye collection presents cities, regions, and countries through the perspectives of fashion photographers, from emerging talents to established names. Each volume features an extensive selection of large-format photographs, accompanied by biographical information and either an interview with the photographer or a critical essay.

Following the Louis Vuitton City Guides and Travel Books, this third collection explores travel photography through a fashion lens, with each photographer bringing a distinctive vision to cities, distant places, and dream destinations.
