Until the early 1900s, southern Hokkaido (now Tokachi and Hidaka) was known for breeding military horses. As times changed, military horses became racehorses.
Today, around 7,000 racehorses are produced in Japan every year, with 80% raised in this region. Approximately 5,000 of these horses eventually become riding and breeding horses, of which 80–90% are slaughtered and used as food for pets and humans.
With photographs that are both brutal and tender, Track explores this complex industry and the relationship between humans, animals, and economic systems.
