The pages of A Minor Wrongdoing unfold as a
hypnotic sequence of candid shots taken at the
neighbourhood of St. Georg in Hamburg, between 2011
and 2014. Hundreds of them, they record the last remains
of street life in an urban area that is currently under going
fierce gentrification after recent official law enforcement
against street-based prostitution. Malmström used a cheap
digital camera forcing its ISO levels to reproduce in each
scene the raw effect of a surveillance cam. The grainy
monochromatic material of his voyeuristic enterprise has
been put together in this voluminous book replicating a
messy police report archive. So, he started frequenting them. For four years, he befriended regulars, bartenders and clients. He became one of them. Then a sort of photo metamorphosis happened through the life in the bars of St. Georg. Like a cockroach, his camera, started crawling on the floor recreating what it feels like after a night of solitary rounds.

Balloons, velvet cushions, faded wallpaper and champagne –decayed fragments of the old fancy times, all shot with flashlight, all in close-up. Moralists call them the prostitutes, pimps, underdogs and petty criminals of Hamburg’s streets of shame. But, in fact, what they are is common people living their lives the best they can. Just like everyone they want to hang out, have fun and some beer.

Somewhere between the bittersweet fatalism of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and the deadpan mien aesthetics of Aki Kaurismäki, Malmström recreates in colour a contemporary “Café Lehmitz”. Its ambience is imbued with visual stylization and a warm-hearted emotional immediacy towards its people who just want to be left in peace and “drink their bitter cup of broken dreams”, as the famous Finnish tango artist Olavi Virta sings. This series of black and white pictures is supposed to reflect the sensation of disillusionment for a large group of people of Margo’s generation who believed in a possibility that their nations would embrace queerness as such and the hostility towards it will gradually come to an end. To keep the conversation going, Margo addresses the lack of cultural memory available for queer women in post-soviet world. Having been overshadowed by heterosexual mainstream, queerness - and especially female one - in the former USSR, always remained a current event with no history, with almost no visual legacy.

Margo approaches this issue with an attempt to bring what could be this legacy upon modern-day queer portrait. The idea of physical tension under intangible circumstances - as in both competition and oppression - is a backbone for the whole series as well as some of Margo’s earlier works. Her childhood background in gymnastics first led to her project called Furious Like a Child, dealing with an issue of forced exposure of female body in sports. Basically we experience time in two different ways. On the one hand it consists of a seemingly endless series of repetitions; between day and night, summer and winter, waxing and waning moon, fertile and infertile periods, ebb and flood. On the other hand we experience time as something irreversible. As humans we know that we were borne and that we will surely die, that life progresses in a way that we cannot control. All these movements through time, linear as well as circular ones, are marked and communicated by certain powerful means at our disposal; rituals. They are powerful because they draw on so many more meaningful systems of symbols than just languages…

Delta is not about individuals or places, but about fragmentary images to illustrate the feeling that everyone is part of a root system and the images are symbols of an involvement.

My way of working is that I a lot of the time coexist with the people I photograph, usually people I never meet before. He had just graduated from photography school in Barcelona and felt confident with his camera. Aside from family visits to his grandmother after the fall of communism in 1989, he had never been back to his homeland on his own since he emigrated to Germany at the age of twelve with his family in 1982. This book brings together some of the pictures taken during this first journey back home. It recalls permanent emotions and fleeting sensations alongside the bits and pieces of daily life. The photographer visited fruit markets, fields and villages, old historical places and unfamiliar cities, from his hometown of Gliwice to Auschwitz and Warsaw. He took pictures of the familiar and unfamiliar, attempting to track down forgotten friends, unearth hidden childhood memories and forge new emotions and illusions. In all, he was trying to determine how he would have felt if he had never left his country and how life would be if he stayed in Poland now that turning back was once again an option. First Journey Home is a tale about a man’s romantic return to his homeland, the garden of his childhood. It is a captivating homage to that very mellow moment of excitement that saw him off and has motivated him to keep up with photography ever since. Above all, it is about the journey itself and the wistful longing, the passionate yet futile willingness to recover one’s former innocence through insignificant things and black-and-white pictures. The small (8.3 x 18.7 cm) punch cards that make up each finished object were an early system by which computer programs were fed into generations of computing machines in the 1970s, through a combination of printed binary codes and punched holes – both of which are still visible on the cards used here. As such, like my previous projects with E Tablets and electronic ink, these works continue my investigation into outmoded or defunct technologies from both their aesthetic and practical points of view. In this case I am interested not only in the specific colours and combinations of colours of the cards, which produce their own abstractions, adding to those of the original images, but in the ways in which the sequences of printed numbers and the process of pinning them together replicates the essence of digital technology in a totally man-made and man-altered way

<span style="caret-color: #000000; There were no photographs to illustrate the story so Beckman called the the reporter and introduced herself. He agreed to drive her out to Maravilla Park and make introductions to members of the local gang. Everyone had their poses down; they reminded me of the punks and New York B-Boys. One day, I asked a kid, ‘What is that teardrop tattoo under your eye?’ and he told me, ‘That means I’ve been in jail.’ They were badass but I didn’t know. To me, they were just kids.
