Work from Leda y el Cisne by Karen Paulina Biswell (Tropical Mythology: Leda and the Swan).

“A sudden blow: the great wings beating still
Above the staggering girl, her thighs caressed
By the dark webs, her nape caught in his bill,
He holds her helpless breast upon his breast.”
— W.B. Yeats, Leda and the Swan

The burning sun beats down on lush vegetation, infusing it with fertility. A desolate tennis court is set against the backdrop of a typical Colombian holiday home, where this sublime narrative unfolds with a disquieting naturalness.

This work reinterprets the Greek myth of Leda, who was assaulted by Zeus in the form of a swan. The series becomes an intimate performance, exploring the intensity of an enduring pursuit of fertility, sexuality, and mortality.

Karen Paulina Biswell (born 1983) is a photographer of Colombian origin, raised in Paris after her family fled the political violence of the early 1990s. Her diverse and boundary-defying practice engages with themes of vulnerability, morality, and human fate. She is particularly drawn to overlooked aspects of contemporary life, focusing on the invisible and defiant elements of society, as well as extreme psychological and emotional states.
