When Freddy Langer studied under Beaumont Newhall at the University of New Mexico, his book The History of Photography had already been published in numerous editions and translated into many languages. But it still defined the canon of the medium at that time. As a journalist and critic, Freddy Langer has not let go of the question of how to add to it in the present day. Over the past forty years, he has reviewed a good thousand photo books and photo exhibitions. Often out of the enthusiasm of the moment, sometimes with exaggerated skepticism. Now, with the distance of years and decades, he has selected from this pool the reviews of those one hundred and fifty books that he believes are enduring. These include classics from Diane Arbus and Robert Frank to Lewis Baltz and Gilles Peress, to each of whom he has devoted comprehensive reviews. But he also ventures into uncertain territory with a selection of young talents who have received little attention. At the same time, the collection of his texts reflects the development of the photobook market - and thus the changing view of the world.
