This portrait of James was made in 2022 and is part of Rocío, a project exploring the people and landscape of a valley in rural New Mexico where my family has lived for generations.

James lived alone in a cabin farther up the valley. A veteran, he kept two dogs and lived a solitary life. He passed away this year, leaving no family.
