Mark Mahaney’s Polar Night is a passage through a rapidly changing landscape in Utqiagvik, Alaska’s northernmost town. It explores prolonged darkness through the strange beauty of a snowscape cast in a two-month shadow.

The unnatural lights that flare in the absence of the sun and the shapes that emerge from the landscape reveal a world that is unexpectedly beautiful in both its softness and harshness. While it is impossible to ignore the impact of climate change in this Arctic environment, Polar Night ultimately becomes a visual poem about endurance, isolation, and survival.
