Gabrielle Duplantier is a French photographer from the Basque Country in southwest France. She works in black and white, and her photographs of women, children, houses and landscapes are soft, dark and dreamlike. Her earlier books include Terres Basses and Volta.

Pâle brings together 50 black-and-white photographs, edited by Duplantier with the photographer Ilias Georgiadis. Instead of following one place or story, the book moves through people, places and memories like an imagined journey. The title, meaning ""pale"", refers to how these images and memories have faded over time. The book is handmade, printed on ivory paper with transparent sheets between some pages, in an edition of 500 numbered copies.
